When to Book Vietnam Resorts: Timing, Rates, and What to Avoid

Vietnam's top resorts sell out months in advance over Tet and the Christmas-New Year window. Here is the insider timing guide to getting the rooms you want at the best rates.

Booking a Vietnam resort is not complicated, but timing it badly costs real money and occasionally means you cannot get the property you want at all. Here is what the industry knows that most travellers do not.

The Blackout Windows

Two periods see maximum demand and minimum negotiating power:

  • Christmas and New Year (Dec 24 – Jan 3): The best beach resorts in Phu Quoc, Da Nang, and Nha Trang are fully booked 4–6 months in advance. Rates are 40–80% above rack rate. Book in July for December travel.
  • Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year, late Jan/Feb): Vietnamese domestic travel peaks here. Beach resorts fill with Vietnamese families. International visitors often find the experience charming but operationally chaotic — many staff return to their home provinces, service can slip.

The Best-Value Windows

May and June — after Chinese New Year traffic dies, before peak European summer demand. Rates drop 15–30% and resorts are quieter. Central Vietnam beaches are at their best. October — shoulder season for most destinations. The central coast is entering its rainy season (avoid Hoi An), but Phu Quoc and Nha Trang are still excellent. Significant rate reductions.

Direct Booking vs. OTAs

Book direct with the resort for anything over four nights. Most properties will match or beat OTA (Booking.com, Agoda) rates when contacted by email, and will add value — a room upgrade, early check-in, complimentary dinner — that the platforms cannot offer. OTAs are useful for price comparison and last-minute bookings where the resort's inventory is already allocated.

What to Always Ask For

When booking directly: late checkout, breakfast inclusion, and the best available room at your category (not the worst). Most luxury resorts will grant at least two of the three if you ask politely and book more than 30 days out.
