Vietnam for Honeymoons: Romantic Resorts and Itineraries
Vietnam has quietly become one of Asia's most romantic destinations. Lantern-lit ancient towns, private beach villas, and candlelit dinners on the water — here is how to plan the perfect honeymoon.
Vietnam offers an almost unfair combination of romantic ingredients: ancient towns strung with coloured lanterns, remote island beaches that feel like private discoveries, luxury villas with private plunge pools, and a cuisine built around sharing. It is also excellent value for money compared to the Maldives or Bali, which makes stretching the honeymoon budget into something genuinely exceptional straightforward.
The Classic Honeymoon Circuit
Most couples arriving for a Vietnam honeymoon follow some version of this route: Hanoi (2 nights) → Ha Long Bay overnight cruise (2 nights) → Hoi An (3 nights) → resort beach stay (4–5 nights). It covers the cultural highlights without exhausting yourself, and ends with proper relaxation. Fly out of Da Nang, Nha Trang, or wherever your beach resort is located.
Hoi An: the Romantic Capital
No city in Vietnam is as inherently romantic as Hoi An. The ancient town's 400-year-old trading houses are best experienced at night, when paper lanterns cast everything in warm amber and red light. Take a lantern boat on the Thu Bon River. Get clothes made on Tran Phu Street (tailors work overnight — order on day 1, collect on day 3). Eat at Cargo Club — the upstairs terrace overlooking the river is one of the most romantic tables in Southeast Asia.
The Best Honeymoon Resorts
Six Senses Con Dao: The ultimate. A private island with almost no other guests, bioluminescent plankton nights, and a wellness programme. Expensive and worth it. Four Seasons The Nam Hai, Hoi An: Private pool villas, a beach to yourselves in the early morning, and a spa that deserves its own trip. Anantara Quy Nhon: Cliffside villas on a mostly undiscovered coast — intensely romantic precisely because it is remote. Azerai La Residence Hue: A converted French governor's residence on the Perfume River. Not a beach resort, but one of the most atmospheric hotels in all of Southeast Asia.
Practical Tip
Always mention the honeymoon when booking. Vietnamese hospitality customs make this significant — you will almost always receive flowers, a fruit plate, and turndown chocolates. Some resorts offer complimentary room upgrades for honeymooners when occupancy allows. Ask.
